Fishing boat Grenaa Star refloated after pier collision. Picture by Adrian Don, ElectricPics PhotographyA fishing boat left partially sunk after it was badly damaged in a collision with the south Tyne pier has been refloated.

The Grenaa Star hit the pier before beaching at Little Haven, South Shields, early on Tuesday morning.

Working at low tide on Friday, salvage experts from Tyne & Wear Marine and the Port of Tyne made the hull waterproof enough for the vessel to be pumped out.

Two work boats then towed it to a south Tyneside shipyard, where its fate will be decided by the insurers.

The boat’s captain suffered a head injury when it struck the pier.

Following treatment, he was arrested by Police on suspicion of being a master, pilot or seaman unfit through drink and bailed.
